An Outline of a Funeral Mass

Introductory Rites*: At the entrance to the church the body is sprinkled with holy water and symbols are placed. The procession follows.

The Liturgy of the Word

  • First Reading
  • Responsorial Psalm (usually sung)
  • Second Reading (optional)
  • Gospel Reading
  • Homily
  • Prayers of the Faithful

Liturgy of the Eucharist

  • The Offertory* (Bread and wine are brought to the altar)
  • The Eucharistic Prayer
  • The Lord’s Prayer and The Sign of Peace
  • Communion*

Final Commendation and Farewell

  • The body is incensed and a Song of Farewell is generally sung.
  • Recessional*

*Hymns and solos may be inserted at these points.

You may wish to think of people from your family and friends who can:

  • Read the 1st reading and 2nd reading. (It is helpful if the readers are familiar with the Mass and have read during Mass before). Copies of the authorized readings are included at the back of this booklet. Other scriptures may be possible with consultation of the priest or may be included in a vigil service.
  • Bring forward the gifts of bread and wine.
